Our research and study

An excerpt from the renowned mycotherapy expert and researcher, Ivan Jakopovich, PhD:

“In the primordial soup of the creation of life — in the proto-ocean, perhaps a billion years ago — lived the predecessors of (single-celled) fungi. The history of life on Earth is, in the fullest sense, their history too: without fungi life could neither emerge nor be sustained or developed.

Only fungi and bacteria break down the organic matter of dead plants and animal into inorganic matter. They are, therefore, the eldest of ecologists. Without them there would be no humus; no fertile, cultivatable soil. Our daily bread, wine and beer would not be possible without yeast. And in our modern times fungi, which make up the third great kingdom, alongside the plant and animal kingdoms, continue to grow in significance in agriculture, industry, medicine..

The production of medications in the modern world is unthinkable without the lower fungi, moulds in particular – including penicillin and many other antibiotics. On the other hand, the medicinal qualities of some of the higher fungi, above all those of the class Basidiomycetes, and the possibilities of their medicinal application, remain a virtually unknown territory to official pharmacology and Western medicine.

While phytotherapy, scientifically tested, has long been recognized, and is even back in fashion, mycotherapy – taken in its broadest sense as the empirically and scientifically founded practice of preserving human health, the prevention of the emergence and development of disease, and direct expert healing using fungi and fungal products, especially of diseases that official medicine is not even close to resolving (malignant, viral, chronic…) – continues to face anonymity, suspicion, fear and disbelief.

And yet, behind the knowledge and use of the medicinal qualities of some types of mushrooms, there are thousands of years of experience of traditional medicine, thousands of cases of precise scientific research, published clinical and other experts’ works, hundreds of patents and a number of registered medications (e.g. in Japan, lentinan and PSK have been registered cancer fighting medications since the mid 1980s and are, in terms of market placement, among the top 10 anti-tumor preparations on that market, with sales in excess of 400 million dollars a year). Far from the charlatanic negation of the customary preparations and methods of medical science, the mycological segments of traditional medicine and modern scientific research seriously and responsibly collaborate and contribute to the struggle for healthier human life, both of the individual and the community.

Mushrooms contain both antibiotics and immunostimulants, substances effective in combating tumors and viruses, substances that reduce cholesterol, prevent the clotting of blood vessels, regulate blood pressure, improve blood flow, balance blood sugar levels, regulate digestion, improve the work of respiratory organs, act as anti-rheumatics and anti-allergic, stimulate or calm the central nervous system in a harmless fashion, improve sexual function, improve physical strength and endurance, slow the ageing process…

The ancient knowledge of these qualities of mushrooms and the thousand year tradition and experience in their use have been reviewed and tested by numerous teams of eminent scientists using modern research methods, for at least fifty years, nowadays applying the cutting edge of technology.”

Frequently Asked Questions:

What exactly is Shiaqga and where does it come from?

Shiaqga is a medicinal mushroom that thrives in cold, wet, low-sun exposure areas.

Historically, the Native American tribes that lived in the Columbia River Basin have used the sacred Shiaqga mushroom for medicinal purposes for thousands of years.

As Chief Man Found Standing explains,

"The story goes that one of their healers discovered that sick deer would eat this specific mushroom and quickly recover. They started testing it out on their own sick people and discovered its wonderful healing properties. Even though it was very bitter, for millennia it became so popular for healing that a small amount was put into their food every day.  Just a couple hundred years ago there were literally hundreds of thousands of Native Americans that were using the Shiaqga mushroom every day.

Sadly, over the last couple hundred years, this knowledge was lost.  The Indian Reservations were established, and the Native Americans were forcibly removed from their traditional hunting areas.  Because of that, some of the knowledge about the Sacred Plant Medicines was not passed down to the next generation. Next came the forced children's education program and the quick modern processed foods.  Those further ensued the loss of knowledge about natural healing amongst the Native Americans.

The final blow came back in 1978 when free health care was given to the Native Americans.  Rather than following their traditional roots of gifting payment for services performed by the Medicine Man or Woman, the free modern drugs were seen as a cost-free solution to their health problems.  The Native Americans no longer had to worry about natural medicine and payment for such services because there was a “free cure” available."

Why is the Shiaqga mushroom extract so powerfully healing?

One of the most exciting parts of mycotherapy is the understanding that our bodies are designed to be healed by mushrooms. When ingesting medicinal mushrooms, our bodies are able to recognize the specific therapeutic active compounds of the mushroom and use it to naturally and dramatically improve our immune system.

Medicinal mushrooms, including Shiaqga, contain a very specific healing molecule called Beta-glucans within their cell walls. When ingested, Beta-glucans are able to pass through our stomachs and into our small intestines, where they are transported directly to the immune cells called macrophages, (imagine macrophages as the neighborhood cops on patrol).

When the macrophages receive the Beta-glucans, they send signal molecules to all of the other immune cells, notifying them of the presence of Beta-glucans. This creates a chain effect where the other immune cells, such as T-Cells, B-Cells, Neutrophils, and Natural Killer cells, become hyper-stimulated and boost their regular immune defense activity into a powerhouse of immune defense. The macrophages break down the Beta-glucans into smaller pieces, giving the entire body access to these powerful molecules.

Medicinal mushrooms naturally contain the ability to hyper-stimulate your entire immune system with the power of beta-glucans and in our extracts we are able to give you  94,000,000 molecules of beta-glucan per serving!

How Beta Glucans Boost Immunity & Fight Cancer

Dr. David Jockers DC, MS, CSCS

"The breakdown of the immune system is resulting in many chronic ailments of the 21st century. A response system known as immunomodulation can help support the immune system using biological co-factors along with specific nutrients and herbs. Immunomodulation is crucial for modifying the immune response to properly defeat infections in the body. One of the greatest immunomodulating weapons for the immune system is found in compounds called beta glucans.

A healthy immune response is triggered when infectious and foreign agents such as bacteria and viruses invade the human body. As a result, the immune system responds with key inflammatory markers designed to attack the site of infection while causing minimal damage to the rest of the body.

Decreased immunity and an overactive immune response can result when the body is overstimulated with real and perceived threats. This leads to a weakened immune system, and the individual will become more susceptible to the development of cancer and infections. Individuals with an overstimulated immune system also have an increased risk of chronic inflammatory conditions such as autoimmune disorders and asthma.

Beta Glucans and the Immune System Beta glucans do not naturally occur within the body and need to be consumed from sources such as mushrooms and yeast. The polysaccharide compound beta glucan is comprised of sugar molecules joined together. Polysaccharides have the ability to carry biological data as a result of their supportive structural capacity. Branch-like structures result from polysaccharides joining together at several locations and the length and position of the beta glucan structure is referred to as Beta 1,3D glucan.

Beta glucans bind and help specific immune cells to achieve a well-coordinated attack on their targets. Scientists refer to beta glucans as “biological response modifiers.” A modified response supports immunomodulation by preventing hyper inflammation and an autoimmune response.

Beta Glucans and Cancer

The rapid growth of cancer in healthy individuals can over-activate an individual’s immune system. Beta glucans bind and activate specific innate immune cells including macrophages, antibodies, and natural killer (NK) cells so that it can trigger an immune response. The ability of beta glucans to modify the attack of immune cells on invasive agents supports an efficient and stronger immune response.

Beta glucans prime immune cells to recognize complementary immune defense compounds. The antibody antigen response is coupled with beta glucan for a biologically synergistic response to kill cancer cells. The coupling of these two defense tools may even be a stronger therapy than chemotherapy or radiation. Furthermore, the ability of beta glucans to work in cooperation with antibody complexes poses no adverse health reactions as do conventional cancer treatments.

Beta glucans effectively stimulate an immune response from T-cells, NK cells, cytokines interleukin (IL) 1 and 2, as well as macrophages. Research supports the ability of beta glucans to reduce the growth rate of cancer cells all while stimulating a stronger immune response to foreign invaders.

Specifically, NK cells are crucial to inhibiting cancer growth and are solely responsible for detecting and controlling tumors. NK cells seek and destroy tumor growth.

Beta Glucans and Immune Stem Cell Development

Additionally, beta glucans stimulate the assembly of immune stem cells inside bone marrow. New immunocytes are released into the blood and varied lymphoid organs. This will increase the immune police work against potential invaders and improves the attack against cancer. This can be critical for individuals receiving conventional cancer treatments such as chemotherapy or radiation. These treatments make the body more susceptible to infection by decreasing circulating immune complexes and immunocytes.

Beta glucan also stimulates various cells within the body to unharness anti-cancer molecules throughout the body. These molecules can include interleukins 1 and 6, hydrogen peroxide, gamma interferon, and tumor necrosis factor which have been shown to fight cancer and stimulate a healthy immune response.

Beta Glucans Helps Fight Infection

The Montana Center for Work Physiology and Exercise Metabolism released a report showing that beta glucans can mitigate the common cold and control tumor cell growth.

It is well known that firefighters are faced with both physically and emotionally taxing responsibilities. The research done at the Montana Center for Work Physiology and Exercise Metabolism showed that firefighters who received beta glucan as opposed to a placebo exhibited a 23% reduction in infections of the upper respiratory tract. The director of the Montana Center wrote that “these results are consistent with previous clinical research involving marathoners, individuals with high stress lifestyles, and the general population.”

Beta Glucan is Potent and Safer than Traditional Therapies

One of the most critical factors at preventing the development of chronic inflammatory disease and infection is a strong immune system. Beta glucan exhibits remarkable effects at both priming immune cells and coordinating a successful immune response.

Over 1,000 scientific articles have been published reporting the many biological benefits of beta glucan. Beta glucan is also one of the safest therapies available with immunostimulating and cancerostatic properties. Compared to traditional medical therapies, beta glucans are affordable and a safe alternative for preventing and healing cancer."

Besides Beta-glucans, why else is Shiaqga so powerful?

Shiaqga is one of the highest natural sources of the trace mineral: germanium.

"According to Dr. Otto Warburg, a Nobel Prize winning biochemist, “Germanium helped to increase the delivery of oxygen to cells. Germanium helps to boost the oxygen supply to healthy cells to slow the growth of tumors."

Germanium improves cellular oxygenation. This helps to fight pain, keep the immune system functioning properly, and rid the body of toxins and poisons.

The list below outlines some of the main roles of germanium in the body:

  • Acts as an antioxidant by protecting the body’s cells from oxidation and the production of free radicals
  • Boosts the immune system, increasing the number of antibody cells and increasing the function of natural killer and T cells.
  • Increases the oxygen uptake in the cells
  • Stimulates the production of interferon (killer cells)

The American Cancer Society claims that germanium can be used to treat leukemia and cancers of the lung, bladder, larynx, breast, and uterus. They also claim it can help neurosis, asthma, diabetes, hypertension, cardiac problems, Parkinson disease, neuralgia, chronic fatigue, hepatitis, and cirrhosis of the liver.

The body does not store germanium so it must be consumed in a natural form. The symptoms of Germanium deficiency include:

  • Cancers
  • Heart Disease
  • Immune disorders
  • Increased LDL (low density lipoprotein) cholesterol levels that can cause blockages in the arteries
  • Infections
  • Osteoporosis

Incorporating foods in the diet that contain organic germanium is an effective way to increase tissue oxygenation. A healthy, balanced diet and natural supplementation will provide the germanium needed. The following foods contain the greatest concentrations of germanium are broccoli, celery, garlic, shiitake mushrooms, milk, onions, rhubarb, sauerkraut, tomato juice, aloe Vera, comfrey, ginseng, and suma.

On the market today, there is a synthetic form of the organic germanium, a form that is not found in nature known as Ge-132. Consuming high levels of certain types of synthetic germanium has been linked with a number of detrimental effects including:

  • Kidney failure
  • Bruising
  • Liver damage
  • Skin rashes

Organic germanium protects the body from almost every ailment and disease. Protect your body with the real deal."

Avian Flu & Shiaqga

Avian Flu Research Abstract
Dr. Landis
Location: Moroni, UT
Date: June 2006 through Sept. 2006

Subject: 36 Hubble and White King Squabbing Pigeons
Control Group: 10 Pigeons
Test Group: 26 Pigeons

Introduction:

Avian Influenza is a common problem for poultry operations in the United States. Most commercial poultry plants are under continuous quarantine because of the very real threat of the introduction of new and mutable strains of Influenza.

The Battery Method of commercial poultry production provides the perfect laboratory to study virus mutability, since the environment is not only not natural (requiring the virus to change is modus operendi), but also the close quarters and significantly diminished immune systems of the battery birds provides an excellent pathway for the “skipping of generations.”  In other words, what might have taken countless generations to create in the wild, is dramatically facilitated by the Battery Method.

Research Description:

A small backyard flock of squabbling pigeons was used for this research. The pigeons were housed in a facility with less than one square foot floor space per bird, with nest boxes attached to the back wall.  This population density exceeds that of most Battery Production Facilities and so goes further in concentrating the transmissibility and mutability of virus.

Ten birds were housed separately but with the same approximate living quarters. These were used as controls.  The test group consisted of twenty six birds housed as described above.  The Test Group was fed a ration containing “Shiaqga” mixed into the feed for one week prior to the test.

The Control Group was fed normally.

Two infected individuals were obtained from a local, wild flock.  The birds were demonstrating the classic symptoms of Avian Influenza.  One infected bird was placed in each of the pens and the groups were observed for seven days.

Data:

Control Group:

All of the control birds were infected with the Influenza within three days of exposure. All of the control group birds, including the original vector, died within the seven days of the observation period.

Test Group:

Although all of the test group birds demonstrated symptoms of infection, i.e., nasal discharge, coughing, swollen eyes, etc., none of the twenty six test birds died during the observation period. The only bird in the test pen to succumb was the original vector.

Follow up:

The Test Group continued to receive Shiaqga and were observed for three months post-infection. During that time, only two birds died – one of egg binding and another became entangled in the mesh wiring of the pen. None of the birds exhibited any symptoms after the initial bout of flu. The hens all went off production and did not become eggy again until the following spring. Molt was as usual.

Postscript:

It is interesting to note that, after the research was terminated, and the test group birds were no longer receiving Shiaqga in their feed, the loft was infected by a different wild strain of Influenza which had been transported to the loft by wild starlings. The entire loft was stricken with the infection and two thirds of the birds died within the first five days after infection. Those that survived never returned to normal production.

Findings:

The commercial product “Shiaqga” provided the immune support needed for the closely quartered birds to fight Influenza.  The results of the Test Group were not unlike an influenza epidemic that is “winding down.”  Individuals became symptomatic but were able to fight off the virus.

The results of the Control Group were reminiscent of the first weeks of an epidemic, when the virus is the most dangerous. These observations are compelling and demonstrate a need for greater research into the effects of Beta1;3, 1;6 glucan use in prevention of Influenza Outbreak.
